Asthma
By Lita Lee, Ph.D. A New Childhood Epidemic
Asthma statistics in 2006 report that about 20 million people in the U.S. have asthma including 9 million U.S. children under 18. Asthma is the most common chronic condition among U.S. children and up to one million asthmatic children experience more severe symptoms due to exposure to secondhand smoke. About 5,000 asthma deaths occur annually. Asthma cases and deaths are increasing. One of my friends told me, “half the children in my son’s class at school have asthma.” His son is 15 years old. Not only is asthma increasing among young children, but also they are now dying of asthma whereas in the past, asthma was not considered a potentially fatal disease.
