The attorneys of Morgan & Morgan are investigating injuries caused by NuvaRing, a hormonal contraceptive manufactured by Organon. It has been reported that women have suffered blood clots, strokes and other cardiac side effects as a result of NuvaRing use.
NuvaRing is a once-a-month contraceptive that consists of a small plastic ring that is inserted into the vagina and remains there for a three week period. NuvaRing works by releasing hormones that prevent pregnancy. Research suggests the type of hormone released by NuvaRing (desogestral) is especially dangerous to the women who use it. In fact, the consumer advocacy group Public Citizen asked the FDA to ban oral contraceptives that contain forms of desogestral because this dangerous hormone has been implicated in a higher risk of strokes, blood clots and other cardiovascular problems. All hormonal contraceptives carry some risk of cardiac side effects, but since being approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2001, NuvaRing users have reported more such side effects than are usually seen with other hormonal forms of birth control. Note from Lita Lee: One of my clients just sent me this sad story of the death of a young woman 2 ½- months after using NuvaRing. Christina was full of life, happy, energetic, and loved her husband of 17 years and their 13 year-old daughter.
At the onset of using NuvaRing, she started having headaches. They were not severe so she didn't pay too much attention. Then one morning, she woke up with a severe headache, began vomiting and became lethargic. She was helicoptered to OHSU in Portland and where she was diagnosed with a blood clot in her brain. Once in surgery, surgeons were alarmed to find multiple blood clots throughout her brain. They tried to get to all of them and planned to do another CT Scan the following day to be sure all clots had been addressed. Christina's brain began swelling and her condition became grave. She was placed into a medically induced coma to address the brain swelling and was put on life support. By the next day, her condition worsened and her brain began shutting down. She was taken off life support in a last attempt to address her brain swelling, but efforts were halted as it was determined that her brain had no further activity. Blood clots were found in other organs such as her liver.
