Aurora Finale

Many of the major winter constellations such as Taurus, Orion, Perseus, Gemini and Auriga are highlighted by the final moments of this auroral display of October 31, 1991. The aurora started out as a very tight vortex of light which then opened to a flame-like shape and finished by covering almost the entire sky with parallel bands of pale green light. Available as a 5 x 7 or 10 x 15 inch print. 20" x 30" photos available upon request.

Cold Fire Over Denali State Park

During a very active aurora display on October 31, 1991, a brilliant spiral of emerald green light arched over Denali State Park in Alaska. It took on a flame-like appearance as it traversed the sky past the constellations of Orion, Auriga, Perseus and Taurus. Available as a 5 x 7 or 10 x 15 inch print. 20" x 30" photos available upon request.

Epilobium angustifolium (Fireweed) Greets the Dawn

On the morning of August 12, 2000, after a rare display of Northern Lights and Perseid meteor showers, the colors of the night sky seem to have painted the landscape.  The upper McKenzie valley disappears into a Fuchsia haze and the distant peaks of Mt. Jefferson, Three-fingered Jack and Mt. Washington highlight the distant horizon. Available as a 5 x 7 or 10 x 15 inch print. 20" x 30" photos available upon request.

Hale-Bopp Over the Three Sisters

Photographed April 11, 1997, from Mt. Bachelor in central Oregon. In a remarkable coincidence, the comet Hyakutake also passed through this same part of the constellation Perseus i.e. the Head of Medusa, exactly one year earlier. The Milky Way provided a starry backdrop for the Hale-Bopp comet from its dim beginnings in the constellation Sagittarius, and then past Cygnus, Cassiopeia, with peak brilliance in Andromeda and slowly fading as it coursed past Perseus, Taurus and finally Gemini. Available as a 5 x 7 or 10 x 15 inch print. 20" x 30" photos available upon request.

Light in August

This photograph was taken during the predawn hours of August 12, 2000, from a 5000’ ridge on O’Leary Mountain during the Perseid meteor shower. A strong geomagnetic storm precipitated by earlier solar eruptions resulted in Northern Lights that were visible as far south as Florida. The outline of Mt. Jefferson can be seen on the distant horizon. Available as a 5 x 7 or 10 x 15 inch print. 20" x 30" photos available upon request.
